The Seed Stitch

There are so many different stitch patterns you can make with using the 2 basic stitches the knit stitch and the purl stitch. We decided to bring to you a new stitch every Friday. 

Today's Stitch of the week is The Seed Stitch.
This stitch is made of alternating stitches with the knit and the purl stitch. You will knit the purls and purl the knits. If you do not know what that means here is a breakdown. The first row you will knit one, purl one, knit one, purl one and so on. The next row will be the opposite P1, K1, P1, K1, till finished that row. A Stitch A Week

This is the most basic of all stitches, It is made of of knitting every row with the Knit stitch. If you do not know how to knit the Knit stitch check out the post here first. It is easy to knit, it's reversible, lays flat and is stretchy. The perfect stitch pattern for knitting a scarf.

So You Want To Knit: Binding Off

Once you have finished knitting your going to need to get your project off the needles. This is called Binding Off aka Casting Off. 
There are some different ways to Bind off but this is your basic method.

So You Want To Knit: Purl Stitch

The second stitch you need to learn when learning to knit is the Purl stitch. We showed you how to do the knit stitch in a previous post. If you haven't see it you can check it out here. 

As with the Knit stitch there are two ways to do the Purl stitch the English Method and the Continental Method. The English Method you use your right hand to hold the yarn. It is also known as American, Throwing and Right handed methods. The Continental Method also known as the pick method, you hold the yarn with the left and and scoop the yarn up with the right needle as you knit.

As with the Knit stitch I will be sharing with you both methods.

So You Want To Knit: Knit Stitch

There are only two basic stitches you need to know when it comes to knitting. The Knit stitch and the Purl stitch. Once you have mastered those two stitches there are hundreds of different stitch patterns you can use.

Today we are going to teach you the Knit stitch.

Once you learn the Knit stitch you will also know how to knit the Garter stitch. The Garter stitch is when you use the knit every stitch on every row. There are 2 ways to do the Knit stitch The English and Continental methods. The English Method you use your right hand to hold the yarn. It is also known as American, Throwing and Right handed methods. The Continental Method also known as the pick method, you hold the yarn with the left and and scoop the yarn up with the right needle as you knit.

Everyone has their own way of knitting so I have added a video to show you each method.

So You Want To Knit: Cast On

So you want to knit but not sure what Cast On Technique to use? Well good thing I am here to help, [right?], but before we do that, you have to decide what type and size of needle you are going to use, as well as the type of yarn.

If you are just starting out and this is your first time knitting, make sure you check out my other blog posts in the series, "So You Want To Knit: Getting Started." In there, I go though the different types of needles and kinds of yarn most people use to knit."So You Want To Knit: Yarn Labels" Help you read and understand the yarn label. "So You Want To Knit: Knitting Gauge" a video to teach you how to read your knitting gauge and "So You Want To Knit: The Slip Knot" as it is the very first step you need to know before you being to knit.

If you are like me and you want to practice a little before you even start your first project, I suggest a Bamboo or Wooden needle in a large size. I used a US11/8mm needle. I liked using the Bamboo when first starting out because with Bamboo, the yarn doesn't slide off as easily, and you wont have as many dropped stitches as you would if you used a metal or plastic needle.  As for the yarn, I chose to use a 4 Medium [Worsted Yarn]. This wasn't the typical choice of yarn for a 8mm but it was just for practice and it is easier to see your stitches with.

There are many ways to Cast On but these are the three I find most useful and most common. I have decided to put them together in one post for easier viewing. [we will go through some of the other methods at later time]

The Thumb Method

This is one of the easiest and fastest ways to Cast On.

Long Tail Method

This is one of the most commonly used methods of casting on. It gives you a even, clean and stretchy edge, and can be used for most knitting patterns.

Knitted Cast On

For this cast on, you will use two needles. This is a stronger cast on and is preferred when knitting garment items that may have lots of wear and tear. This is also a helpful way to learn the knit stitch at the same time as you will use the same techniques.

So You Want To Knit: The Slip Knot

This is where it all starts. The Slip Knot. This is what anchors your yarn to the needle so you can cast on and continue to knit. But before you make your Slip Knot you need to decide what type of cast on method you are going to use. Some methods you will need to leave some extra yarn to work with. [We will go though the Cast On in the next post.]

So You Want To Knit: Knitting Gauge

So far you have learned about types of needles and yarn and how to read a Yarn label. The next thing you need to learn is how to measure your knitting gauge.

Larger needles will make larger stitches in turn that will make less stitches per inch. Sometimes you will need to knit with a smaller needles or bigger depending on how tight your tension is. [How tightly you knit] When reading a pattern it will tell you how many rows and stitches per inch you need to create the desired item.

This is the first of many Video Tutorials I will be sharing with you.
